Embassy of Angola Celebrates the Culture of Southern Angola in Washington, D.C.

The event was attended by spouses of African ambassadors accredited to the United States, as well as African women and women of African descent from a wide range of professional backgrounds. In an atmosphere marked by exchange, diversity, and the celebration of cultural identity, the gathering sought to highlight the central role of African women as guardians of culture, agents of social transformation, and promoters of solidarity among the peoples of the continent. The cultural programme featured an immersive exhibition portraying the way of life, rites of passage, and traditions of the communities being honoured. One of the highlights of the ceremony was a presentation led by Miss Africa America, who wore traditional Himba women’s attire, gracefully showcasing the strength, beauty, and authenticity of Angolan culture. In addition to the cultural showcase, the event featured two interactive panels in which African women and women of African descent shared their experiences, social initiatives, and projects making a significant impact across the African continent. The exchange of experiences reinforced the importance of cultural engagement and the preservation and celebration of African heritage within the diaspora. According to Câmia Van-Dúnem, spouse of the Ambassador of Angola to the United States, the initiative was primarily aimed at promoting unity among African peoples, strengthening bonds of sisterhood, and celebrating the richness of Angolan traditions, with particular emphasis on communities from the southern region of the country. The event concluded with a moment of fellowship, celebrating African identity, cultural heritage, and pride.
