Exploring New Areas of Cooperation Dominates Meeting with Governor General of Canada

During the virtual meeting, the two officials reviewed Angola’s Chairmanship of the African Union (AU) and Canada’s leadership of the Group of Seven (G7). Angola’s Ambassador to the North American country expressed his desire to see cooperation between the two countries expanded across several areas, with particular emphasis on agriculture, infrastructure, energy, sustainable development, and leadership in regional peace and security processes. Agostinho Van-Dúnem, in addition to serving as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Angola to the United States of America, based in Washington, D.C., also represents the Angolan State in 11 countries, including Canada, Mexico, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, a Caribbean country located in the Lesser Antilles. Canada recognised Angola’s independence in 1977. However, the two countries formally established diplomatic relations on February 3, 1978. In 2004, the two governments signed a Joint Declaration of Intent on Strengthening Bilateral Relations, aimed at enhancing trade and investment ties, as well as strengthening political dialogue and cooperation between the two countries.
