Angola’s Ambassador to the United States, Agostinho Van-Dúnem, met on Wednesday, March 5, with U.S. Congressman Brian Mast, a Republican representing the State of Florida and Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

The meeting focused primarily on peace and security on the African continent, as well as on strengthening bilateral relations between Angola and the United States.
During the meeting, Ambassador Van-Dúnem highlighted Angola’s progress in promoting regional stability and cooperation under the leadership of President João Lourenço, reaffirming the country’s role as a key player in advancing peace in Africa.
Congressman Mast expressed interest in deepening dialogue on security issues and exploring opportunities for further cooperation, while underscoring the United States’ commitment to stability and development on the African continent.
Among the topics discussed was Angola’s role within the Southern African Development Community (SADC), as well as the country’s efforts in conflict mediation and the promotion of sustainable development.
Ambassador Van-Dúnem emphasised the need for strategic partnerships to strengthen maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea and address threats such as piracy and illicit trafficking.
The meeting also addressed initiatives aimed at strengthening cooperation in the defense sector, including strategic exchanges and specialised training. Another key topic was the deepening of economic relations, with particular emphasis on infrastructure and development investment, especially in the Lobito Corridor, a strategic route for regional integration and international trade.
The representatives also explored investment opportunities in key sectors such as agriculture, technology, and industry. Congressman Mast expressed interest in strengthening economic ties between Angola and the United States and expanding cooperation in support of sustainable growth.
In addition to Ambassador Agostinho Van-Dúnem, the meeting was attended by the Ambassador of Tanzania, Elsie Sia Kanza, and the Ambassador of Uganda, Robie Kakonge.
