Angola’s Ambassador to the United States, Agostinho Van-Dúnem, discussed Angola’s growing role on the international stage during a roundtable held on April 29.

Speaking to students from the Portuguese Club at George Marshall High School ahead of Portuguese Language Day, celebrated on May 5, the diplomat highlighted that Angola is undergoing a period of transformation and remains committed to political, economic, and social reforms.
Agostinho Van-Dúnem also stated that Angola is a trusted partner in conflict resolution, the promotion of sustainable development, and the advancement of multilateral dialogue.
The Ambassador also referred to the significance of May 5, highlighting the date’s particular importance for Portuguese-speaking countries.
“More than a celebration of language, it is an affirmation of our cultural richness, international cooperation, and the potential of a language spoken by more than 260 million people across all continents,” said the Head of Angola’s Diplomatic Mission in the United States.
“Angola has been an active participant within the Portuguese-speaking community, promoting cultural diplomacy, education, and exchanges among Portuguese-speaking countries,” he added.
Agostinho Van-Dúnem encouraged the students to continue learning Portuguese, describing it as a language that opens doors to different cultures and opportunities.
“Your choice is a strategic one. Proficiency in Portuguese can open doors not only in Angola, but also in several countries across Africa, South America, Europe, and Asia,” he concluded.
