Agostinho Van-Dúnem

Biography

Agostinho de Carvalho dos Santos Van-Dúnem was born in Sambizanga, Luanda, Angola.

On 28 March 2023 he was appointed by President João Lourenço as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Angola to the United States of America.

A graduate in International Relations from the University of Minho, Agostinho Van-Dúnem began his career in 1998 as an Assistant in the Diplomatic Advisory Office of the Presidency of the Republic of Angola. In that role, over more than 20 years, he worked closely on major files concerning the international relations of the Government of the Republic of Angola, principally on the African continent.

Agostinho Van-Dúnem holds a Master's degree in Governance and Public Management (FGV). He served as Secretary-General of MIREX, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where he played a central part in designing and implementing new management models for diplomatic missions, alongside his work on foreign policy and diplomatic files.

Elected a Member of the National Assembly, the Parliament of the Republic of Angola, in the IV Legislature (2017–2022) and the V Legislature (2022–2027), Agostinho Van-Dúnem served in turn as a member of the Committee on Constitutional and Legal Affairs and as Vice-Chair of the Committee on Foreign Relations, International Cooperation and Angolan Communities Abroad. He was also elected to the Peace and Security Committee of the Parliamentary Forum of the ICGLR, the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region.
